Are DMARDs enough to prevent surgery in rheumatoid hands?

چکیده
The hands are commonly involved in RA Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, auto-immune disorder characterised by inflammation primarily in the joints. The small joints in the hands are typically involved in RA, with both the 1987 American Rheumatism Association revised criteria for RA classification including “arthritis of hand joints” as one of the criterion [1] and the 2010 RA classification criteria awarding more points for small joint involvement (i.e. themetacarpophalangeal joints, proximal interphalangeal joints, second to fifth metatarsophalangeal joints, thumb interphalangeal joints and wrists) [2]. RA is the most common of the inflammatory arthritides; a study in the UK found the prevalence of RA to be 1.16% in women and 0.44% in men [3]. In Asia, the prevalence of RA varies from country to country. In rural areas, the prevalence of RA is 0.12% in Thailand, 0.2% in Indonesia, 0.26% in Taiwan, 0.3% in Malaysia, 0.34% in China, 0.55% in India and 0.7% in Bangladesh [4].

Initiation of treatment particularly by combination of DMARDs...
متن کاملWound Healing with Medications for Rheumatoid Arthritis in Hand Surgery
Introduction. Medications used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, such as corticosteroids, disease-modifying agents (DMARDs), and injectable biological agents (anti-TNFα), may have widespread effects on wound healing. In hand surgery, it is important to balance the risks of poor wound healing from continuing a medication against the risks of a flare of rheumatoid arthritis if a drug is temporarily ...

Medications that slow the progression of Rheumatoid arthritis are called disease modifying anti Rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). American College of Rheumatology (ACR) recommends early use of DMARDs, so that they can slow or help inhibition...
متن کاملDoes regular use of a complementary medicine of Olea Europe and Ficus carica have adverse effects on lipid profile and fasting blood glucose of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients under treatment with DMARD regimens containing methotrexate?
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients are vulnerable to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in which atherosclerosis plays a major role. In this study, the lipid profile and fasting blood sugar (FBS) of RA patients receiving a complementary medicine of olive and fig, as add-on therapy for routine disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) regimen containing low dose methotrexate (MTX), were...
